Executive Director Reflections on the US Elections
By Bev Weise, Executive Director
As an American who grew up believing in the promise of our country as a place that strives for a fair, just and equitable future for all, these recent election results were a political earthquake and felt like a punch to the gut. When I thought of the ripple effect this election will have on refugees, immigrants, and other vulnerable communities, I felt numb.
Although this political reality clashes with our deepest hopes and values, I thought about our work at Refugee JumpStart Coaching and found solace and hope. It’s moments like this that calls for a deepening awareness of our common humanity. We must double-down on ourcompassion, listening, empathy, presence, curiosity, and truth telling.
It’s what our RJS coaches do with each and every refugee client encounter.
And our refugee clients have taught us how to act with strength, patience, resilience, courage, optimism and hope—all qualities we need to face the challenges ahead.
So this is no time to go numb or feel hopeless. Our strength in the days ahead will come from leading forward with our values, not away from our shared humanity. Together, with the goodwill of our Refugee JumpStart coaches, volunteers, supporters, our resolve remains strongand our mission intact. We draw strength from the positive impact we’re having on both our clients and on our coaches, who together are building trusting, caring and compassionate relationships.
It’s what gives me hope.
