The Art of Matching: People, Not Algorithms

By Bev Weise, Executive Director

At Refugee JumpStart Coaching (RJS), we believe that meaningful coaching begins with the right connection. That’s why, instead of using AI or algorithms, we rely on a thoughtful, human-centered approach to match our clients with one of our 60+ dedicated pro bono coaches around the globe.

It’s not always easy—but it’s worth it.

A strong coach-client match creates the foundation of trust and safety that empowers our clients to grow, take action, and believe in themselves. And while our matching process takes time, the results speak for themselves:

“I learned things about myself I never realized. Now, my future is clear.”

“My coach helped me rebuild confidence during a time of uncertainty.”

“With my coach’s encouragement, I passed the Dutch language exam—and did it with confidence.”

“My coach helped me turn my experience into a strong CV. I soon found a job in humanitarian work.”

“My coach helped me understand my goals, my dreams—and myself.”

So how does it work?

Every client begins with a personal screening by our Coaching Coordinator, Jessica Daniels. She ensures they meet our core criteria (refugee status, English-speaking, some university experience, resettled for 3+ months), and learns more about their goals. Since coaching is a new concept for many, she also explains what coaching is—and what it’s not.

From there, we consider a range of factors when making a match:

  • Time zones and availability

  • Coach specialties (career planning, leadership, well-being, etc.)

  • Industry background (IT, healthcare, social impact, etc.)

  • Language preferences

  • Client requests (such as gender or specific expertise)

  • Coach interests and current client load

If a coach seems like a strong fit, we ask them:

“Would you be excited to support this client in achieving their goals?”

When they say yes (they almost always do!), we introduce them to the client for their first session: the “Match Meeting.”

This kickoff conversation helps both coach and client decide if the chemistry is right. If both say “yes,” the full coaching journey begins—eight sessions that can truly change a life.

It’s not a perfect science. It’s more of an art. But when it works, it’s something special.

A real match made in RJS heaven.
